Toonami Jetstream and Dubs July 15, 2006

Toonami Jetstream launched today, three days early. I was really looking forward to it because I wanted to check out the dub for Prince of Tennis. It’s only available in the United States, but I mean when you think about it, if the show were airing on Toonami itself then people outside the US wouldn’t be able to see it either. It all has to do with licensing and stuff like that and people are making much too big of a deal out of it… besides if you know where to look you can find them ripped (at least PoT).

Prince of Tennis was the only show I really cared about seeing. I would probably never buy DVDs of it, heck I wouldn’t even be bothered to waste any space on my computer to see it so this works for me (TV would be better but beggars can’t be choosers). The dub was decent, they used a California studio that I’ve never heard of before and it was nonunion. I’m trying to work on my skills of picking out voice actors but I’m not very good at it. I couldn’t figure out who was playing Ryoma! There were two names I recognized that could have been him and also three names I didn’t recognize that could have been him too. I have a feeling the new names are probably new aliases for the same old VAs but I can’t tell yet. The one I did recognize was Barbara Goodson as the coach/grandmother, the voice she used wasn’t too good, she can do much better. I have a feeling they’re going to be using the same actors over and over again so it’s a good thing that most of the actors (who I recognized) in it have really good ranges: Wendee Lee and Barbara Goodson can play males and females, Jack Lingo and Kirk Thorton can play old and younger and Yuri Lowenthal and Liam O’Brian can play teenagers and adults… that’s just something silly I noticed.

Mar sucked. Seriously, I just didn’t like it at all. I almost fell asleep watching it. The main character was really annoying. The dub was interesting, Spike Spencer (Shinji from NGE) did the main character’s voice, and his voice is kind of annoying so I guess it fit the character!

I’ve already seen Hikaru no Go and Naruto dubbed so I didn’t bother watching them again. Hikaru no Go is one of my least favorite dubs EVER and Naruto is one of my favorite dubs.

Well with those out of the way the next big dubs for me are Blood+ and Bleach. According to a couple of websites Studiopolis is going to do Blood+ which is really interesting (or not), they seem to be getting a lot of work lately! I’ve heard that Bleach is being done by them too but I’m starting to doubt it. I think that people jump to the conclusion that Viz + California= Studiopolis but both Prince of Tennis and Mar have shown that this is not the case, hopefully they expect Bleach to do better then either of those and shell out a bit more money to get more actors or something…

Wow I can go on and on about things! I really need to stop. OK a couple of things that have nothing to do with anime but I wanted to post them anyway:

  1. The show Psych on USA cracks me up, delicious pudding haha.
  2. Pirates of the Caribbean 2 was lots of fun even though I never saw the first one.
  3. I was looking at the hits that I get from search engines and the weirdest one was “shoving it in” hmmm.
